Phone Review: Redmi Note 10 Pro Max

CHECKLIST RATING: 4/5

Reviewer: Rinsit Sareo

Launched in India on 4th March 2021, the latest iteration in Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series has once again caught the gaze of technophiles with the release of three new smartphones – the Redmi Note 10, Redmi Note 10 Pro, and Redmi Note 10 Pro Max.

In this review, we’ll be looking at the top-end Pro Max and its 108MP quad camera which is the biggest talking point in this series.

Overview

At first glance, the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max is a simple-looking smartphone when it comes to design much like its predecessors, yet sturdy and built to last. On closer examination, you will notice a matte finish combined with a glossy frame which Xiaomi calls the new ‘EVOL’ design. It comes in three colour options – Dark Night, Vintage Bronze and Glacial Blue.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G chipset and comes with 6GB/8GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB/128GB – UFS 2.2 of storage. The phone runs on Android 11 which is based on MIUI 12. On the left side of the phone, there are two slots for SIM cards and a dedicated microSD slot.

Decent Battery

The phone comes packed with a fairly fat 5020 mAh of battery which supports fast charging of up to 33w. Talking about battery life, it easily lasts more than a day with heavy to moderate usage and gets fully charged in about an hour – give or take. Xiaomi boasts of 0 – 100% in 75 minutes which is about true.

Good Display

Other than that, a cool feature of the phone is the massive 6.67” FHD+ Super AMOLED display which has an astonishing 120 Hz of refresh rate and also supports HDR10. While some may argue that the colour accuracy is not that impressive, I’ll give it a pass for someone like me who just likes to watch content on the go. The 120 Hz of refresh rate makes the phone appear not just faster but smoother.

Dual Speakers

For someone who likes to play music all day, the dual speakers are a huge welcome as these are genuinely loud stereo speakers. Mind you.

Camera Setup

The biggest talking point of the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max is its camera – a quad setup with a 108MP primary camera (Samsung HM2 sensor), an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP super macro camera with telemacro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, you get a 16MP front camera.

The 108MP primary camera does deliver some stellar images in both good lighting and low lighting. However, while the dynamic range looks pretty impressive, there are instances when the colours and contrast appear a bit over saturated, specifically the shades of red. But for the most part, the saturation is above average.

What caught my attention was the Night Mode 2.0 feature which captured really good images even in conditions where there was very little lighting. Of course, one cannot particularly expect crisp and sharp images in these conditions but if you’re looking to post on social media, the camera does get the job well done.

Moving on to the 8MP ultra-wide camera, the images taken in daylight are fairly decent but there is some noticeable noise around the edges of the object in focus. It also fares poorly in lowlight as compared to the primary lens.

In my opinion, the macro lens on this phone stands out among the rest of this camera setup. While other phones in this segment come with a 2MP lens, the Note 10 Pro Max actually comes with a 5MP lens and an in-built auto-focus motor which helps to keep the subject locked while taking photos.

Redmi Note 10 Pro Max

Verdict

The Redmi Note 10 Pro Max offers great display, great camera performance, and decent battery life. Arguably yes, the performance could have been better as reviewed by gamers and the non-availability of 5G support is a downside. But if you want the cheapest phone in the market with a 108MP camera, then the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max is definitely for you.
